Morocco will be in the international spotlight during November as the global climate change conference, COP22, takes place at Bab Ighli, Marrakech from 7-18 November 2016. The event is the twenty-second session of the Conference and the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol.
The UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech is the crucial next step for governments looking to operationalise the Paris Climate Change Agreement adopted last year. While the Paris Agreement, which was signed by almost 200 nations, gave clear pathways and a final destination in respect to decisive action on climate change, many of the details regarding how to move forward as one global community in that common direction still need to be resolved.
Global leaders will gather in Marrakech to make decisions that hold immense potential to accelerate and amplify the immediate response to the challenge recognised in the Paris Agreement. This meeting is therefore incredibly important. The selection of Marrakech as the host venue carries huge kudos and recognition.
Delegates looking to escape Marrakech’s bustle and intensity, afterwards or during the 10 day summit, should head to the Atlas Mountains.
Just one hour south of Marrakech, the dramatic snow capped mountains, red earth valleys studded with trees is a serene contrast to the city.
Here you can relax and rejuvenate, take gentle strolls or indulge in more active pursuits, such as horse riding or cycling.
