Wellness retreats in Morocco are sublime, sensuous sanctuaries that recharge the body and soul. They range from luxurious Marrakech city oases – like Palais Namaskar – to rural retreats – such as La Roseraie Spa Retreat, our neighbour in the Ouirgane Valley, one hour from the Red City in the High Atlas Mountains.
La Roseraie Spa Retreat
La Roseraie is an institution in the Ouirgane Valley, known and loved from Casablanca to the Côte d’Azur. Founded 46 years ago, by Abdelkader Fenjiro, the father of the current custodians – Kenza and Nabil, the 40 ensuite guest rooms are dotted around the beautifully mature grounds.
A recent addiction to the magnificent landscape of olive trees, pomegranate and rose bushes is a herb garden. Guests are invited to learn about, and create their own tinctures from the 30 herbs grown in the welcoming and attractive laboratory and workshop adjacent to the retreat’s acclaimed spa.
The experiential approach is part of the evolving philosophy promoted at La Roseraie, which is based around the wellness concept. Yoga retreats, guided tours and treks, bird watching and a soon to open bicycle centre, with Atlas Sports and Canondale bikes, are complemented by an acclaimed spa – with hammam, massage rooms, Jacuzzi and swimming pool – which was completely remodelled last year.
The wellness take at Palais Namaskar, off Bab Atlas Road on Marrakech’s outskirts, is based around the Clarins spa treatments, fitness centre, beautifully manicured gardens and water features that create an holistic sense of wellbeing in luxurious 5-star surroundings.
Elegantly reminiscent of a sultan’s palace, gold domes burnish several buildings, including the contemporary Rococo-dressed restaurant that folds out on to broad terraces that envelope the large swimming pool. Moorish arches, bedecked with roses, form an elegant sentry to guide the traveller to the oasis that is the Clarins spa, the reception, and restaurant.
The vast guest villas are accessed via seemingly floating walkways that criss-cross several subtly lit pools. Entered through three-metre high ornate wooden arched gates, the double fronted, floor to ceiling glass, single storey courtyard villas are stunningly set back from their own private hot and cold outdoor terrace pools.
